Nigel is an empathic, pragmatic and structured professional who is becoming increasingly sought after as an executive coach, mentor and leadership development advisor.
He grew up in Wales and was educated at the University of Lancaster, where he majored in psychology and environmental science, and later, at London Business School.
During his early career, he worked in the environment and sustainability sector for the Nature Conservancy Council and the Natural History Museum, before moving into management consulting with KPMG Peat Marwick in their London office.
He migrated to Australia in 1986 with KPMG, became an Australian citizen and continued in the management consulting sector for another twelve years. He was appointed a Partner with Deloitte in 1995 and led the firm’s Australian healthcare practice.
In 1998, he took his first senior executive role, as CEO of St. John of God Healthcare Service and spent the next seven years in this and other chief executive roles with a change leadership and turnaround focus. He also gained experience as a non-executive director.
In recent years, Nigel has focused on coaching, mentoring and leadership development, as a Principal with major leadership development consulting firms. Recent experience includes leading a transformation program for a major energy company. In this program, he coached the managing director and six of the non-executive directors and senior executives, designed and co-facilitated a series of Board and Executive team workshops, and attended executive meetings to coach and extend team skills. He also recently led a program for the executive team of an ASX Top 100 listed global services company. He is experienced with 360 tools, such as the LSI, and team profiling with TMP.
Last year, Nigel and several members of the SMG team were trained in the New Ventures West Integral Coaching approach. The SMG team are now co-delivering, in partnership with an overseas based coaching company and business school, a large, long-term Integral Coaching Program for the Australasian region of a global company. The program is being delivered by one on one coaching for the top 50 executives, and coaching circles and team workshops for all 3,000 of the employees. This pragmatic and innovative culture change program is starting to deliver profound benefits for the company and for the individual participants.
